Trebbiano

Without question ‘Trebbiano’ is the most famous white grape being grown in Abruzzo, as it is one of the most planted grapes in the world. The name covers a range of sub-varieties that all are renowned for their high acidity. In France, it is known by another name ‘Ugni Blanc’ where it contributes to both still white wine, Cognac and Armagnac.

Trebbiano tends to produce poorer quality wines that are overly tart and neutral in style. This is because of its high yielding potential and lack of flavour. However, when carefully produced and controlled the wines can be crisp and refreshing.

The sub-variety found in Abruzzo tends to have the most character with a more distinct citrus flavour. The Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC, however, permits the use of a range of Trebbiano sub-varieties including those used in Tuscany and Puglia.
